A Cockroach I Actually Like

Pat Reid from the British blog Cockroach: Music, Movies and Media recently interviewed me after reading The Forbidden Apple. Apparently I can never talk about Doris Wishman too much.

GO's June/July 2009 issue

I was chosen as one of GO Magazine’s “100 Women We Love” in the June/July 2009 issue! Writer Cheryl Burke had this to say:

“While doing research for an earlier book project on former New York City Mayor Giuliani’s quality-of-life campaign, Long saw some interesting patterns. ‘I began researching Giuliani’s policies regarding adult-use establishments — the legal term for sex shops — and I discovered that municipal attempts to cleanse Times Square and the rest of the city of immorality and indecency amounted to more than a century-long local tradition. Even before Times Square existed, mayoral administrations had focused on cleaning up vice in the city’s red light districts.’”

Link to My “Behind the News” Appearance

Doug Henwood, the host of the “Behind the News” program on WBAI and the Left Business Observer, emailed me to say he’d posted a link my appearance on show. Take a listen.

“Behind the News” April 9, 2009 (the link takes you to the Doug’s page, then click on “streaming” or “download”).

Radio Interview Madness

I’m going fast and furious on the airwaves here. Yesterday I recorded an interview for “Behind the News” with Doug Henwood, a great show that “covers the worlds of economics and politics and their complex interactions, from the local to the global…Since mystification is one of the tricks that power uses to maintain itself, emphasis is always placed on clarifying the complex.” I hope I clarified the complex when it comes to sex in New York, because frankly, a lot of the moves made by the anti-sex crowd mystified me.

Also yesterday, out of the blue I received an email from a producer at Newstalk, a national radio station in Ireland (!). I recorded a 10-minute interview with host Sean Moncrieff, whose show is simply called Moncrieff! No other explanation needed, apparently. I answered a few queries about the porn industry and its future. Sean and the nice Irish ladies who set up the interview all spoke at 100 miles (200 kilometres) an hour and I felt like I was drawling my responses like an uncouth American. Whaddyagonnado? It was 7:45am Eastern time.

Culture Shocks!

Yesterday I recorded an interview for the syndicated radio program Culture Shocks with Barry Lynn–my first radio appearance! I was thrilled when I realized I’d be speaking with Rev. Lynn, the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. AU is an incredibly inspiring organization dedicated to maintaining civil liberties and a government free of religious intrusion. From the group’s website:

“AU is one of the foremost defenders of the separation of church and state, the cornerstone of religious liberty in America. We are proud to celebrate 60 years of freedom and look forward to continuing our work for many years to come. As a non-sectarian, non-partisan organization, AU’s membership includes Christians, Jews, Buddhists, people with no religious affiliation and others. Democrats, Republicans and independents have joined our ranks. Americans United is an independent organization with no ties to any larger group or political movement. We are a true grassroots organization.”

What’s even more impressive is that Rev. Lynn actually read my book! I could tell, based on his thought-provoking questions. He’s clearly a fan of upholding our freedom of sexual expression, a view I unashamedly espouse in The Forbidden Apple. I do back my position up with extensive footnotes, though.
